Everybody is talking about self care. If it isn’t self care, then it’s ‘me-time’. It seems that we are finally waking up to the fact that we do need to take care of ourselves, that we must consistently prioritize our wellbeing. We cannot keep pushing ourselves twenty-four seven and expect our bodies to keep up with the demands. We need to take the time to unwind, time to focus on ourselves and we need to look after ourselves, body and mind. If this is something that you know that you must do more about this year, then here are a few suggestions for taking care of yourself in 2020.
Accept that you need to prioritize self care
The first step to ensuring that you take better care of yourself this year is to accept that you do need to prioritize self care. It can sometimes seem like a selfish thing to do, and it can sometimes appear to be overly self-indulgent. You are also busy and you have a dozen things to do on your list before you even think of sinking into a hot bath to unwind. It can feel like there simply are not enough hours in the day. You need to work on altering this mindset and turn it on its head. If you do not look after yourself, you are not going to be able to get even half of that list completed as there will come a time when you will burn out. Your body will force you to slow down, and it won’t be on your terms. It makes much more sense to take care of yourself consistently, doesn’t it?
Draw up your own list
What works for you will be different to what works for the next person, so you will need to start by drawing up a list of the types of things that you can do and want to do to take care of yourself this year. For you, there might be nothing better than losing yourself in a good book with a cup of coffee, or perhaps catching up with a friend always puts you in a great mood.
Think about the things that help you relax, the things that you would love to have more time for, the things that make you smile. Those are the types of things that should be on your list. This list is now your go-to for any moments of me-time and these are the things that you need to ensure that you make time for each and every week.
Check off the basics
Along with your own personal list, there should be a few basics that you tick off consistently to ensure that you are looking after yourself. You need to be drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly and eating well. You know that these things are good for you, both physically and mentally.
The challenge here can be getting into those good habits. It is wise to tackle them one at a time if you have tried them all before and struggled. You might spend this week making sure that you always have a bottle next to you as you work so that you can get those water levels up. You might then make them manageable chunks, for example to exercise you might walk to work rather than jumping straight into a new gym membership that you are not sure you will stick to. These are things that should make you feel better, they should not be things that start to stress you out as you struggle to get them done. If you can feel them sneaking into the latter camp, pull back and see how you can make them fit more seamlessly.
There is no substitute for getting outside and into the fresh air. We need the sunshine, we need the exercise and we need to connect with the outside world. There are many benefits to walking surrounded by nature. Along with the physical exercise, it boosts our mental and emotional wellbeing. It can give you time to clear your mind and think, it can calm you and nature can inspire you. You could go for a walk around a park, hike a forest trail, get out with the dog more often or even just go for a good old fashion run or ride your bike.
Freshen up your look
We know that happiness, peace and beauty comes from the inside, but there is still much to be said for freshening up your appearance. A new look can put a spring in your step and it is important to address things that have been knocking your self-confidence. That is why we suggest that you try something a little different this year. Maybe you have been looking into what dental veneers cost for a while or perhaps you are keen to try laser eye surgery. Maybe you are tempted to book an appointment with a hair stylist and go for something completely different, a new cut, a new color. You might not need to do anything so dramatic, you could just change how you do your makeup or you could buy a few new accessories or items of clothing. This might be the time to try introducing more color into your wardrobe or you could start a new beauty regime.
Put things in your agenda
Now that you have a few ideas of things that you might like to do more of or try differently, you should start to put things in your diary. This shows how important they are to you and you will also be able to see that you can do them, that there is time for them.
You might pop a yoga session in for this weekend, an early night midweek and catching up with friends over the weekend.
Booking things in helps to make sure that they happen and it also gives you something more tangible to look forward to. It will break up your working week and help you to feel more in control of your life.
